pinterest challenge: may '15

Yes, it's time for another Pinteresting post! If you're new to Marlee and You, I post at the end of each month about three Pinterest pins that I've successfully (or not-so-successfully) tried. It's a way to get out of the pin and forget slump most pinners get into. Here's what I've been up to this May:

Original Pin (left), My Recreation (right)

I'm always up for a new nail art challenge, and this one seemed pretty straight forward. I used two shades of blue and I'm quite pleased with how they turned out! Trust me, it looks a little gross before you clean the extra from around your nails, but the finished product is sweet! I would definitely use this technique again!

As un-photogenic as my taquitos may be, they were absolutely delicious! This recipe for cilantro mesquite BBQ chicken taquitos wasn't as complicated at it sounds and turned out great! I added extra cheese into the tortillas, which I would recommend to anyone else who tries this. The edges of the taquitos were a little brown and may not have looked appetizing but everyone who ate them thought they were great! Definitely a recipe to repeat!

This is a pin I've had on my DIY board for quite some time and finally got around to throwing it all together. I have so many tickets that I keep from practically everything that gives you a ticket, so this is a great way to showcase them so that they're no longer clutter and also look really cool! You really just need a shadow box which I bought from Michaels on sale - bonus! I love how it looks!

Have you done any pin this month?

may favourites '15

Wow! Hasn't May just flown by! It's almost June, which means I'll be sharing my summer bucket list and a bunch of summery posts with you soon! This May I got to escape to my friend's cottage, went kayaking, had a girls night, went to the movies, dolled up my friend for prom... it's been a good month! Check out my three favourite products that I've been enjoying for the month of May!

The Maine - American Candy
I've been a fan of the band The Maine for years and always look forward to their new albums because their sound has really evolved over time. There's a good variety of songs on this album, and their sound is reminiscent of their old tunes from years ago, which I love! American Candy is a great CD to pop in for those summer road trips, and I did exactly that this past month on our way to the cottage!

Covergirl Full Lash Bloom Mascara
I have been a fan of Covergirl's Lash Blast mascara for years so I went out on a limb to try this Lash Bloom product. Right after I bought it, my penpal Kelly wrote a post with this same mascara as a favourite, so I took that as a good sign and had high hopes for this product! I wasn't let down! I love the brush and formula and who doesn't love a fresh tube of mascara? I'm really pleased with this purchase and have been loving Covergirl this month!

Staedtler Fine-Point Colour Pens
This summer I decided to start an art journal! Don't ask me to define what an art journal is because I don't think I even know myself, but I basically bought a book of blank pages to do whatever the heck I want with them and express my inner art visions! These pens are a great medium for random doodles. The colour quality is great and there are countless effects that can be achieved by these pens! I'll share some art journal creations later, but for now, I'll keep doodling away with these bad boys!

What have you been loving this month?

pitch perfect 2 review

pitch perfect 2 | marlee and you
It's finally that time of year when not only am I done school and able to hit up the movie theater, but all the good movies are coming out at once! I went to see the latest Avengers movie with some friends, then last night I saw Pitch Perfect 2! Don't worry, this post doesn't contain spoilers - I promise!

My bestie and I were super pumped to go catch this flick because we saw the first Pitch Perfect in theaters together! But of course, with every sequel comes doubts that the movie will live up to the hilarious standard set by the original film. Well, let me tell you, I was not disappointed by this second movie! I think it's safe to say that if you loved the first movie (songs, humour, love plots and all) you'd love this second one!

The songs, remixes and mash-ups were great (perhaps better than the first movie) and this time they featured an original song in the plot line. I can imagine some people might have mixed feelings about that part, but I thought it was neat. Daniella and I couldn't help but notice some similarities between past Glee plots and the world championship performance in Pitch Perfect 2. Let me know if you noticed that too!

My absolute favourite things about this movie were the return of awesome characters, the addition of two new Bellas, the songs (of course), and the casting of new vocal groups! For starters, there were trailers featuring the Green Bay Packers... their part was absolutely hilarious! But what I truly loved was that one of my fave YouTubers, Flula Borg, was cast as the lead male singer in the German national team! I'm German and really enjoyed some of the German-based jokes, plus I'm so proud of Flula and his success landing this acting job! In addition, my favourite accapella group in real life, the Pentatonix, had a cameo as team Canada!

All this to say I really enjoyed this movie and encourage any Pitch Perfect fans to go check out this sequel! I liked seeing it in theaters because it was a great experience to watch it all on the big screen with the great sound quality to highlight those beautiful harmonies! Do I think a third movie is a good idea? No. But these movies as a duo are absolutely fantastic and will soon be added to my shelf of DVDs!

Rating: 4.5/5

P.S. watch through the credits because there's an extra silly clip at the end!

Are you planning to watch Pitch Perfect 2?

how to make healthy choices at BBQ's

This weekend is known here in Canada as the May 24 long weekend and most people have Monday off - score! May 24 is often a sort of kick-off to barbeque season and I for one will be camping and attending some celebratory get-togethers! With BBQ season officially underway, I wanted to share a few tips to keep in mind for the next gathering you attend to help make some less-bad-for-you food choices so you don't feel that overwhelming regret the next day after overindulging!

I know a lot of people eat healthy and are active so that when barbeques come around they can indulge and eat whatever they wish as a treat - and that's totally fine if that's you! But maybe some of these ideas can still be useful to keep the gorging to a minimum either way...

healthy choices | marlee and you

1. Find the Veggie Tray
There's always going to be a veggie tray! When you go for your first round of plate-filling (because let's be honest, you'll make a couple rounds to get food), start by grabbing some veggies or fruit if there is any! Go easy on the dip and you're gold!

2. Beware of the Beverages
We don't drink a lot of pop in my house, so I always used to go crazy at BBQ's when there was a huge cooler full of pop cans! In one night, I'd sometimes drink three or four cans! That's insane! I don't want to do any number crunching to add up the calories or sugar or anything like that... what I like to do now is stick with water for the night - my body thanks me for it and I'm sure yours will too.

3. Go Easy on the Condiments
I already mentioned this when I talked about veggies, but this applies to whatever you're putting on your burger, hotdog, salad etc. Take it easy on all the dressings and goops that come in a bottle, but by all means, go ham adding tomato slices, lettuce, onions and pickles to give some flavour to your meal!

4. Location Location Location
If you're at an outdoor get together, choose a seat to settle in that's farther away from the food table! If you plop down right beside it, that makes grabbing all those goodies much more convenient.

5. Bring a Healthy Choice
You can be part of your own solution! I always like to bring along snacks of some sort to BBQ's and summer gatherings, so I may as well bring some hummus and homemade pita chips or another healthier snacking option to share!

Enjoy the outdoor parties!
Feel free to indulge, but also keep these tips in mind!

2015 prom look

My best friend's little sister just had her prom! This officially marks my last prom hype and excitement for me because Brianne is the last of my friends to have their big special senior year day! Yes, that was all a big mouthful. This is just to say Brianne's prom was the last one I'd be involved with, so it was really exciting and fun to join in! I did her nails and make-up for the big day and got to witness all the excitement when she showed me dress pictures and started her prom-look inspiration board on Pinterest! Here are a couple shots from the day:

The weather was gorgeous! Finally! We were all worried it would snow because spring just didn't seem to be happening around here, then BAM: instant summer weather! Brianne's date showed up looking dapper as ever and they both looked super cute together! Brianne's prom look was so well coordinated, with her dress, shoes, clutch and nails all matching in some way. We chose to do a floral accent nail to bring out the pretty flowers from the top part of her dress and I'm thrilled with how they turned out! I'm still waiting to hear stories of the actual prom night itself, but half the fun is the pre-prom primping, right?

What was your prom style?

don't be sorry: a repsone to IISuperwomanII

don't be sorry | marlee and you
I'm a big fan of YouTube and have subscribed to a number of different channels, one of them being Lilly Singh aka Superwoman! Not only is she a fellow Canadian, but she always keeps it real in her rant videos and is super hilarious in general. One of Lilly's latest videos took on a more serious tone where she addressed an issue that us make-up-wearing people need to consider. She noticed that whenever she'd be seeing friends and she hadn't put on make-up and dolled herself up, she'd text them apologizing for her appearance... just think about that for a second. Why should anyone feel the need to say sorry for how they naturally look without make-up or fancy hair or the use of other cosmetic products?

I'm not going to pretend that make-up doesn't make me feel more confident, because it totally does, but there's truly no need for anyone to feel as though they have to say sorry for how they're looking that day! I also really appreciated how Lilly filmed her whole video with a "naked" face to show that she's comfortable with the internet world seeing her make-up-less and vulnerable in that sense. Watching this video definitely served as a wake up call for me and got me thinking of the importance of embracing natural beauty, but also to make your friends comfortable with and proud of their au naturel selves!

Here's Lilly's video, which I encourage you to check out and truly reconsider the effects of your words the next time you think of apologizing about your natural appearance. Even if you may not feel as confident or pretty, there is truly nothing that can be more powerful than natural beauty!

You're beautiful.
