pinterest challenge: june '15

Another month, another Pinterest challenge! At the end of each month, I share three pins that I've done as well as my thoughts. I want to encourage all fellow pinners to get out and do all those great DIY or recipe pins that their boards are full of! Here are my successes for the month of June:

Original Pin (left), Our Recreation (right)

My best friend and I both love baking together and decided to try out this recipe for salted caramel cupcakes that we found on Pinterest! I don't always make cake recipes from scratch, so it was a bit of work, but the results were fantastic! These cupcakes were so rich and sweet and delicious!! An absolute success! Sure, our icing was a little think and doesn't compare to the original pin's appearance, but it was tasty all the same! A definite recommend to anyone with a sweet tooth.

Original Pin (left), My Attempt (right)

Tis the season for cute summer dresses, which means there's always the option to add cute belts as accessories. I pinned this particular idea a while ago and finally chose a belt-tying style to wear with a new dress I got. This pin has a couple other options that I plan on trying as well - I never would have thought of these on my own!

Original Pin

I know a lot of New Year's resolutions get renewed this time of year as people challenge themselves to get into shape for summer! I've been running since April (although I haven't exactly kept to my schedule) and I've searched through Pinterest to find new ways to stretch and cool off after running. This pin (a cropped version here) gave some good ideas and guidance so even though I'm not very flexible, I have stretches that can benefit my muscles after I run!

Have you tried any new pins this month?

june favourites '15

Since I've started doing monthly favourites, I always look forward to these posts and sharing what I've been loving lately! For the month of June, I've really gotten to relax and take it easy and tomorrow I'll be leaving on a two week road trip with my boyfriend Cory and his family! Not to worry, I'll still be posting while I'm away! So that's that - check out what I've been loving this June!

Aerie Hidden Love Body Lotion
Aerie is a great little place to shop, because they often have deals where you buy a certain amount and get a discount or free item! I was shopping there recently and happened to be close to the minimum purchase amount, so I thought I'd try out one of their lotions in order to spend enough to get the deal. I was pleasantly surprised with this product! It has an amazing girly scent, so I often apply this lotion for fragrance purposes as opposed to moisturizing purposes.

Mr. Kate Beauty Marks
I'm a fan of the Mr. Kate blog and have been admiring the Beauty Marks for quite some time. There was a promo where they went on sale, so I knew it was time for me to finally purchase some! Beauty Marks are essentially just metallic temporary tattoos, which I thought would be perfect for summer! They're really fun and last for two days just like the product says - I'm loving these right now!

EOS Strawberry Sorbet Lip Balm
I was actually given this lip balm for Christmas, but I like to finish up other chapstick-like products before starting a new one. This past month I've been using the Strawberry EOS lip balm and it's working really well for me! I think the packaging is super cute, so I don't mind keeping it on display beside my bed for all to see.

You Deserve A Drink: book review

I've mentioned a few times about my love for certain YouTubers, and Mamrie Hart is one of them! Lately almost every YouTube personality has published a book, to the point where I don't really care anymore because literally everyone is doing it - BUT there are two YouTuber-written books that I have in my possession because I couldn't resist, one of which is You Deserve a Drink. Mamrie posts YouTube videos of drink recipes she invents to acknowledge recent people and events in pop culture. Daniella and I have tried a few of these concoctions for our girls nights and loved them. But the reason I wanted this book is because of how fun Mamrie is to watch (in web series like Hey USA and the Camp Takota movie). In this book she shares the most ridiculous stories in such a hilarious manner, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

YDAD book review | marlee and you

The Book is divided into chapters, most starting with a drink recipe in typical Mamrie style, followed by a crazy story that inspired the drink idea. Mamrie is a great storyteller and I often laughed out loud reading this book. She has some colourful language at times, but she's really staying true to herself and her voice as an author.

I liked that this book was written conversationally and was an easy read - perfect for summer! The entire book was littered (in a good way) with movie and celebrity references. Honestly, there was a handful I wasn't familiar with, but that's because Mamrie and I were born a decade apart and I didn't grow up with the same fads and classic movies. These references definitely made me want to watch some old films and reread this book!

I don't know if I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't already know who Mamrie is... maybe it could still be equally funny to read, but I found there were a lot of "inside joke" type things throughout the book that I only understood references to because I've been subscribed to her for so many years! If you're a YDAD fan, definitely grab a copy! And if you're curious and want to read about the most bizarre true stories of a thirty-something southern gal, go ahead and check out You Deserve A Drink!

Have you read any YouTuber-written books?

operation organization: DVDs

DVD organization | marlee and youI dont know about you, but I like to keep my room tidy and I LOVE organization! I could roam around closet organization stores for hours and never get bored. I've dedicated this summer to downsizing my "stuff" and preparing to move into whatever sort of tiny apartment I end up with next year. With that being said, I'll be sharing some organization and downsizing ideas to keep your life simple and not overwhelming with clutter and things you don't need! Here's my solution to the DVD problem:

I know some people take their DVD collections pretty seriously. My mom, for example, has a small collection of DVDs, but likes the look of having them lined like books on top of our entertainment unit. This idea wouldn't be ideal for people that care about the visual appeal of their DVDs.

My solution is quite simple: ditch the DVD cases! Most DVD cases are recyclable now and they take up so much room, is there really any point in keeping them around? I bought a DVD "Disc Wallet" from Staples that holds 32 DVDs and is as wide as 3 plastic DVD cases - for $10! There was also a 64 slot option, but I didn't need that many. My DVD collection mostly consists of school plays and bridal fashion show tapings rather than actual DVDs.

I feel like a huge weight of visual clutter is gone and out of my life. I now have extra space on my bookshelf and when it comes time to move house, all my DVDs aren't going to take up a whole box to themselves! The best part is you'll never put the wrong DVD back in another DVD case and all your movies will be in the same place!

Would you try this organization solution?

5 songs that bring me back

old songs | marlee and you
You know when you're driving and a song comes on the radio and memories from 10 years ago flood your brain? Maybe this only happens to me, but I have quite an extensive list of songs that remind me of my childhood that I can still jam out to! These songs bring me back to my CD player/walkman days where I'd sing into my hairbrush and pretend my life was a Disney movie. (Was I the only one that did this?) I narrowed my list down to 5, so take a look and see if these songs bring you on a music journey back a decade or two!

Sk8er Boi - Avril Lavigne
I always looked up to my older sister, so when she went through her Avril Lavigne phase, I did too! It was cool to see a Canadian artist succeed, plus Avril was a punk style icon - we can't forget her signature loose neck tie and spiked belt!

Spinnin' Around - Jump5
I don't really know how popular this group was, but in my church growing up, every girl was a Jump5 fan! Their songs were so techno-digital-pop-y and stuck in your head all day. I still know all the words to every song and actually got to see Jump5 live on their farewell tour! (Seriously, if any of you grew up with Jump5, leave a comment - I'm so curious!)

Hey Now - Hilary Duff
I was also a huge Disney Channel fan and of course loved watching Lizzie McGuire! When the Lizzie McGuire Movie came out I had to see it and I loved it! She crushed that song in the end and BAM Hilary Duff's singing career began. I still have her first album! This song brings me back to sleepover days with my friends from elementary school!

Destiny's Child - Survivor
This song reminds me of the radio... is that weird? My sister and I had our favourite local radio stations and one year this song blew up like crazy! I knew all the words, plus it's a great dance beat. I'm currently a huge Beyonce fan, so not much has changed.

Baby One More Time - Britney Spears
Last but not least... I'm sure this list would be incomplete without this classic! I had this song burned onto a CD and played it so many times either the CD player or the CD stopped working (I forget which). My sister and I made up a dance to this song too. I really liked Britney Spears until she got all scandalous...

Let me know what songs bring you back to your childhood days!
